Mussa arrived in Beirut late last night, joining a host of foreign dignitaries who have rushed to Lebanon in recent days to help end the Lebanese crisis. He remains hopeful that the impasse will be broken even in the last fifteen minutes of the constitutional period. Following a meeting in Ain El-Tineh with House Speaker Nabih Berri, Mussa expressed his optimism despite the presence of some obstacles.

He is in Beirut one more time. Arab League Chief Amr Mussa kicked off his meetings today in Baabda in a last minute bid to find a solution to the Lebanese crisis. After talks with President Emile Lahoud, Mussa said he and the Lebanese president discussed the present situation in all its complications, stressing, however, that there is still hope for a solution. Mussa reported Lahoud as vowing that he will not divide the country. The Arab League Chief said he will not give up, as efforts to reach compromise are ongoing, and leaders bear a historic responsibility to salvage Lebanon. He said the solution must be Lebanese. Mussa, who arrived in Beirut Monday evening, said a compromise ought to be reached and if there is political will, the impasse may be broken, even in the last 15 minutes of the constitutional period. The Arab League Chief headed straight from the airport to the Serail, where he held talks with Prime Minister Fouad Siniora. He then went to Koraytem for talks with MP Saad Hariri. Mussa did not make any comments on either meeting. |
