Pessimism engulfed Lebanon and its people, as they stand at the perimeters of a tornado.
Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Nesrallah Boutros Sfeir accused certain political leaders of going against their word. Both the majority in government and the opposition are holding fast to their positions. Sfeir said various obstacles to the election have been created locally and internationally. The Maronite head did not announce the candidates but accepted the role of mediator so the responsible of a failed solution will not be his. If a solution is not reach all scenarios are possible to develop, including the election of two governments or a constitutional void. For his part Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea doubts Wednesday's session will go through saying: the situation is very complicated and very difficult. He accused the opposition of blocking the French initiative while underlining the complexity of the situation. But Geagea said he will continue to deploy efforts to solve the crisis. He even expressed readiness to meet with Free Patriotic Movement MP General Michel Aoun before or after the elections. He dismissed rumors of a split in the March 14th alliance stressing that MP Saad Hariri is negotiating on behalf of the alliance and consults with its members. Aoun also expressed doubt that the election will take place Wednesday. He was susceptible that a solution will be reached by a consensus president. Aoun called on Christian MP's to head to Rabieh in an act of solidarity. In a similar tone, Presidential hopeful Boutros Harb warned against the dangers of a weak head of state. In an interview with the Kuwaiti daily As-Siyassa, Harb highlighted his independence from the March 14th forces even if the alliance supports is candidacy. As politicians are scrabbling to see the light at the end of the tunnel, Lebanese hope not to see history repeat itself. |
