International Efforts In Full Gear In Beirut As Time Is Running Out For Election

International efforts are in full gear to help break the impasse Lebanon is facing, as the clock is ticking down to the constitutional deadline for electing a president. What will happen between today and tomorrow? Nobody seems to know, but foreign mediators are trying to pave the way for a last minute breakthrough. Today, House Speaker Nabih Berri met with US Ambassador to Washington Jeffrey Feltman. MP Michel Aoun met French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, and the Italian ambassador to Lebanon Gabriel Kikia. For his part Italian Foreign Minister Massimo Dalema arrives in Beirut today, joining efforts with Kouchner and Moratinos to help settle the Lebanese election crisis. The trio were in Beirut last month but their efforts in helping bridge differences between the feuding sides were futile. |
