In the first violence to erupt in Lebanon since last week's postponed presidential election, two people were killed and six others wounded yesterday in a clash between followers of an opposition Islamist group and supporters of parliamentary majority leader Saad Hariri in northern Lebanon. Followers of the pro-Syrian Islamic Unification Movement and the Tripoli Brigades, a new group that has been raising slogans in praise of Hariri, exchanged machinegun fire in Abi Samra neighborhood in the port of Tripoli. A security source told AFP Nawwaf Haidar, an IUM member, was killed and seven other people wounded and taken to hospital. One of those wounded, Rashed Yassin, a member of the Tripoli Brigades, died later in hospital of his injuries. The army deployed in the area and calm was restored. |
