Ban Calls For Prompt Solution To Lebanese Crisis

From New York, UN Chief Ban Ki Moon called on the rival parties in Lebanon to act as statesmen and put their differences aside in order to reach consensus over the upcoming President. Ban told reporters that the situation in Lebanon is critical, stressing that the constitutional vacancy could not go on forever. The UN Chief meanwhile revealed that he explained to House Speaker Nabih Berri that now was not the time for any political deal related to the formation of the government or appointment to posts. On another note, Washington called on the international community to contribute to the finances of the international tribunal. The US
Ambassador to the UN Zalamay Khalilzad stressed on the importance of accelerating the formation of the tribunal to try perpetrators of the February 14 assassination. On Lebanon's crisis the US official deplored ' the climate of intimidation and violence.' |
